RULE JOINT CUTTER COMBINATIONS

A common requirement in furniture making is the production Cutters Timber thickness
of rule joints. To produce this type of joint it is necessary to Core box Ovolo recommended maximum
use an ovolo/round over cutter for the table and a core box T406.4 T1327 7 10
cutter for the leaf. For the joint to work correctly, it is
important for the centre line of the radius to be in line with the T409.5 T1328 9 12
bottom of the table top and the hinge point. The round over T412.7 T1332
on the table top should be cut first, then the leaf should be T413½ T1333½ 12 16
cut, using the core box cutter with a fence to control the cut T416 T1334
depth. It is best to test this with some scrap timber of the T417½ T1335½ 13 16
same thickness until a satisfactory fit is achieved. The table
on the right details the cutter pairs required to produce joints T419 T1336 15 19
T420½ T1337½
along with the recommended and maximum timber thickness
they will cut. Please note that the maximum thickness will T425 T1338 17 23
produce a joint with a large quirk dimension (X) which may T425.4½ T1339½
look out of proportion. T432½ T1341½ 21 25
N.B. Ovolo cutters need a round over or zero quirk bearing T438½ T1342½ 24 28
